28.) “My Soul, Your Beats!” by Lia (LiSA for the 4th episode version)
Angel Beats! OP 1
I consider the piano to be my favorite instrument EVER. I’ve always wished I can play piano as good as my friends can…if only I could…wipes a lone tear…well, anyways, having said that, it would be a travesty not to add this opening to my list. Very detailed background sceneries and fluid animation coupled with a “soul”-ful tune gives this opening its “heart” wink wink.
27.) “Monochrome no Kiss” by SID
Black Butler OP 1
Apart from the piano, the guitar comes second on my list of favorite instruments, but we’re not talking about my top instruments. I find it really interesting and cool how this particular opening utilizes the use of the guitar as an acoustic accompaniment to the song. It adds flavor to Black Butler and is a real nice tune to listen to on its own. Definitely one hell of an opening theme.
26.) “Red Fraction” by Mell
Black Lagoon OP 1
Another action-y opening theme for an equally action-y anime, “Red Fraction” is one of the things that gives Black Lagoon its sense of style and attitude. Some people may find the “bad english” top be rather annoying and unneeded, but to me, I just love it when anime openings do that, and this opening is one of the prime examples of that.
25.) “Borderland” by Mami Kawada
Jormungand OP 1
This opening has a sort of digital feel to it, and I found that factor quite amusing. Add that element to its fast action-y beat, and you get an awesome opening fit for almost any action-y show. “Borderlands” is also an addicting tune as well that may as well have you listening to it for hours on end (I know I have).
24.) “Sorairo Days” by Shoko Nakagawa
Gurren Lagann OP 1
I didn’t find anything special about this opening at first. I thought it was generic and formulaic for an opening about a very over-the-top show such as Gurren Lagann. It wasn’t until I listened to it more often that I have come to value its simple, yet oddly epic, nature. It was so fitting that I said to myself that “if this opening does not play in one of the last episodes, I will be really depressed”. Needless to say, I got my wish, and what I got was an AMAZING BALLS-TO-THE-WALLS AWESOMENESS.
23.) “Connect” by ClariS
Madoka Magica OP 1
Hmmmm…now, for this particular opening, what I found interesting is how much it contrasted from the actual show itself. Here you have a really cutesy, light-hearted opening theme for a seemingly similar cutesy, light-hearted anime. Haha, well, I’ll leave the spoilerific factors on a corner somewhere. But what I’m trying to say is just this: cute and fluffy.
22.) “Yasashisa no Riyuu” by Chouco
Hyouka OP 1
I fell in love with this opening the very first time I heard it. With a combination of an impressive animation style and a serene song, “Yasashisa no Riyuu” was a definite shoo-in for this list. Sure, some people may prefer the second opening, but for me, this is the one I would put on this spot.
I’m actually familiar with all of these openings with the exception of the Black Lagoon one, and indeed there’s more awesome stuff here.
My Soul, Your Beats is a great song, I tend to love Key openings in general and the music really was fantastic in Angel Beats so I really came to appreciate it all. Monochrome no Kiss was a really catchy song too, probably my favorite part of the Black Butler anime. Connect is a nice song too, it definitely contrasts a lot from the actual Madoka story and it’s actually kind of sad seeing the opening knowing that it’s a depiction of what could’ve been (and what Madoka probably imagined her life as) yet such things just weren’t meant to be.
Hyouka and Jormungand had great OPs too, I remember those two were among my favorite openings of spring 2012 back when I kept up with those series. Spring 2012’s anime had a lot of great music in general, both for the openings and the endings.
But my favorite of these would definitely be Sorairo Days, in large part because Gurren Lagann’s my favorite anime and I’m just a huge fan of it all. Gurren’s a story that really means a lot to me and I was inspired by Simon and how he struggled through the story, and Sorairo Days is a song that not only fits perfectly with the story but also nicely portrays Simon’s feelings as he continues on with his life, never giving up and pressing on in spite of all the difficulty and tragedy he faced, and it truly is a beautiful and powerful song that I have a lot of love for.
Didn’t you just love it when Sorairo Days played during the last fight sequence in Gurren Lagann? ^__^
That really was a great moment, fit that part perfectly and was a fantastic use of the song. Gurren Lagann really is inspirational and Sorairo Days will always have a place in my heart. I also really loved the other Shoko Nakagawa songs, Happily Ever After was used very well and the two songs in the movies were amazing too.
