It started as a rumor.

The Star Wars Battlefront PlayStation 4 Bundle available now at retail that includes a PS4 console and the Star Wars: Battlefront game also includes download codes for bonus classic games: Super Star Wars, Star Wars: Racer Revenge, Star Wars: Jedi Starfighter, and Star Wars: Bounty Hunter.

When the last three games are loaded up, the PS4 displays the classic PS2 logo, which fueled the rumor that those games were being emulated, as opposed to running new ported versions for the PS4. All in game menu prompts also matched up to the DualShock 2 controller, which gave further evidence that these were not just remastered ports.

Speculation ran wild for a few days after this discovery about the possibility of playing classic PlayStation 2 games on PlayStation 4 until Wired.com contacted Sony and got this short reply by email,

“We are working on utilizing PS2 emulation technology to bring PS2 games forward to the current generation. We have nothing further to comment at this point in time.”

Sony hasn’t said much about their plans for PS2 emulation, except for a few teasing tweets like this:

Will we eventually be able to take our dusty copies of Final Fantasy X and God of War and play the games directly off the disc? Or will we be required to re-purchase the games we want to play from the PlayStation Store? Will all PlayStation 2 games be compatible, or just some? Let us know in the comments if you’re excited for this feature or not, and what PlayStation 2 games you hope to play on your PlayStation 4.
