Escaping the Inquisition in “Yesterday Origins”

Pendulo Studios might ring a bell to some of you who are into adventure games – they have a pretty large portfolio and over twenty years of experience. Their latest offering, Yesterday Origins, is set to release on the PlayStation 4, XBOX One, and PC on October 13.

I was given the opportunity to play through a preview build of the game and I have to say that while it certainly left me scratching my head in more places than one, it also managed to lure me in and kept me wanting to press on, solve the puzzles, and see where the intriguing story would take me. What’s interesting is that this game has an interwoven story that takes you from the late-15th century to the present day and back, all while telling a story that keeps you on the edge of your seat wanting more.

For the video here, I play through the first “Chapter” of the game where we find the main character, Don Miguel (John Yesterday in the present day), trapped in a Spanish prison in 1481, accused of being the “son of Satan.” One thing I will say here is that you really are on your own: the game does not hold your hand in any way. I found myself having to check, double-check, and triple-check several things and find little nuances about the game strictly through experimentation. However, in the end, it made escaping the jail cell feel all the more satisfying…Even if it did take me nearly an hour to do so! What’s more, the method used to escape the cell was strictly ingenious, and that’s what made it all the better.

The dialogue and story-telling is also really good in this one, and even in this first hour of the game, I greatly enjoyed the banter between John and the jailer.

Yesterday Origins is set to release cross-platform on October 13, so you can check them out on Steam or visit their homepage for more information!
