‘The Retro Play Show’ #24: “Rockman 3” (MD, Pt.1)

In last year’s series of The Retro Play Show, I did full playthroughs of both Mega Man and Mega Man 2 for the NES. Naturally, at some point I wanted to do the third entry into the series, however, I wanted to mix things up a bit. Fans of the series already will know this, but in 1994, the first three Mega Man titles on the NES were remade with 16-bit graphics and remastered soundtracks and released for the Sega Mega-Drive in Japan (as Rockman Mega World) and Europe (as Mega Man: The Wily Wars), with a special bonus game called Wily Tower included. Sadly, this port never made it in cartridge format to North America, although it was broadcast on the Sega Channel at some point.

I was originally going to stream the European version of the game, but given its native PAL format, the game runs rather sluggishly. Since there are no language differences really to speak of, I decided instead to stream the Japanese version, which is NTSC at 60Hz. This, of course, runs perfectly smoothly and just as it was intended to on the actual game console.

This game is actually perhaps my favorite of the classic series, followed closely by Mega Man 2 and Rockman & Forte. It is also a very long game, and it is for this reason that this stream stopped after the eight Robot Masters were defeated (which in itself took close to an hour). Next time, we will go after the Doc Robots and then Dr. Wily himself! 🙂

I am currently trying to build up my Twitch following, so please “follow” me on Twitch and help grow my channel!
