‘The Retro Play Show’ #19: “Sonic 3 & Knuckles”

I probably have always been more of a Nintendo fan-girl than a Sega one, but that said I have had a fondness for the blue hedgehog since he first appeared on the scene back in 1991.  However, although I had friends that owned a Sega Genesis (or Mega Drive, for those of you outside the U.S.), I didn’t actually end up getting one until around 1994, at which time the system came bundled with “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” and “Sonic & Knuckles.”  Technically I did have a Game Gear before I picked up a Genesis and had the 8-bit version of “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” that I think came with it at the time, but that game paled greatly in comparison to what I got with the Genesis!

Perhaps it is for this reason that I have a love of the game I play in this run here.  Technically speaking, it is actually two games that combine into one.  If I recall, this was because Sonic 3 was actually meant to include the contents that ended up in the other game, but this was scrapped for various reasons.  Regardless, playing them together gives you a much longer and more satisfying experience than playing either of them alone.

This video represents the final episode in Series 1 of my Retro Play Show.  It was live-streamed on the evening of November 12-13, 2013 and features special guest commentary from Adnan Ahmed, an awesome gamer and all-around great person.  His birthday was approaching and when he found out I was willing to stream this game, he wanted to join as a little gift to himself in order to sit back, relax, and chat about his fond memories of this and other games.  He only made it in for the first half of the stream, but it was still great having him join in!

I hope you have time to watch this in bits and pieces at a time (yes, it is just over three hours long!) and that you can share in my retro nostalgia and have a relaxing time of it!
