Like Fan Games? Check out “Super Mario Country!”

Personally, I love game hacks and fan-games because quite often they are really incredible feats and works of art, capturing the love that the designers have for a particular game or series and bringing it to life for others to play. There are some really amazing ones out there, to be sure, yet the other day I came across one in particular that caught my eye because the designer, DJ Coco, decided to base the game’s engine (right down to the native resolution) on Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins for the original Game Boy.

This game, which was released in July of 2014, features seven zones for Mario to explore on this very large island, all of which hold the power to break the seal on a doorway that prevents him from going to the island’s mysterious mountainous region. What lies at the mountain summit? That’s up to Mario to find out!

The game is quite challenging at times and indeed drove me to elicit some choice four-letter words during the linked playthrough session, but at the end of the day, it’s all in good fun!

In the video here, I play through Beach, Forest, Graveyard, Snow, and part of Canyon Zone, all while having fun and getting mad!

If you’d like to download the game yourself to give it a try, you can find it here at the Mario Fan Game Galaxy!
